The Lobby. in testifying before the Senate investigating committee, Senator I.ane of Oregon stated that he had been approached by at least three lobbyists during t'-c ptes cnt session of Congress, one rep resenting the wool interests, one representing sugar and the othet the silk industry. He called them by name. Senator Kenvon of Iowa made the following statement before the same committee: "Social lobby ing in Washington justifies every word that President W ilson ut tered in regard to the presence of an industrious lobby." Senator Xcwlands of Nevada staled that he bad been approach ed by Clans Spreckles of San I'rancisco and by him urged to oppose free sugar. (libers have given similar tes timony, yet some of the partisan republican newspapers are in clined lo look with disfavor upon (he I 'resident's asserlion thai an "insidiious lobby" exists in Wash ington. The testimony already given before the senate committee proves conclusively that a lobby does exist and that an effort is being made by paid representa tives of the corporations to pre vent the passage of a just and equitable tariff bill. JOiiT COUNTRY CLUB IS PROMISED Albany Sportsmen invite the' Corvallis People to Jcin j Forces with Them. THE PROPOSITION HAS MET WITH MUCH FAVOR Enthusiastic Meeting Was Held Wednesday Night When Mat ter Was Discussed. Relative to the visit of a party of enterprising Albany sportsmen at Corvallis in the interest of the pro posed country club, the Corvallis Gazette-Times says: Shall Corvallis and Albany join in developing a "Country Club" at Gran ger, midway point on the C. & E. between Corvallis and Albany? It will require from $10,000 to $20,000 to get such an institution in good work ing order and Albany enthusiasts are confident that the Hub City can hold up its end of the string. They are equally confident that nothing is more to be desired and than nothing could prove more efficacious in cultivating the "entente cordiale" between the two cities, which are soon to become the St. Paul and Minneapolis of Ore gon. Wednesday night at the Commer cial club rooms, Messrs. Young, John ston, Leiningcr, Weathcrford, Cusick and Tracy, of Albany, broached the proposition to Corvallisites and ex plained the plan. In brief, the sug gestion is that 75 to 100 acres of ground on the river at Granger be bought, a roomy country club house be built witli all accessories. A care taker should be provided, lunches served at all times and the place keut "dry" and high-toned in every respect. it was argue! tnat luangcr is easily ccessihle hy river, electric line ana j roads that "dead" water offers op- ' portuuily for swimming and boating. i groves offer summer coolness and I beauty, and a great house with dance floors and card ' arrangements woulcl offer ideal onditio lor iiKUior cn- 1 tertaiuni'.'nt.
